Dublin and Cork National Gathering

Friday 14 to Monday 17 October 2022

Dublin and Cork National Gathering

Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin
Join us in Dublin and Cork this October for a wonderful weekend of choral and organ music, with the opportunity to explore all four cathedrals: St Patrick's Cathedral, St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin, and Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork.

Beginning at 1pm on Friday 14th October, we will explore the majestic St Patrick’s Cathedral.  Master of the Music, Stuart Nicholson will talk to us about cathedral music at St Patrick’s and the Music School.

In the evening, we head to St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral for Vespers sung by the Palestrina Choir and a talk by Choir Director, Blanaid Murphy.

On Saturday morning, there is the option to take a tour of The Book of Kells and the Old Library at Trinity College.

At 1.15 we walk 10 minutes to the beautiful Christ Church Cathedral for an organ recital given by James Short, recently appointed Organist and Assistant Director of Music, followed by a choice of guided tours, followed by cream tea and a talk by Tom Little, Director of Music.

Choral Evensong will be sung by the Cathedral Choir at 6pm, followed by the Gathering Dinner in the Crypt at 7pm.  Our guest speaker will be David O’Shea, from Trinity College Dublin.

On Sunday you are welcome to attend any of the services at the three cathedrals:

  • St Patrick’s Cathedral Choir offer Choral Matins at 11.15am and Choral Evensong at 3.15pm.
  • Christ Church Cathedral Choir offer Choral Eucharist at 11am and Choral Evensong at 3.30pm.
  • St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral offer Sung Mass at 11am.

At 7pm on Sunday we will reunite as a group for a private organ recital in the Quire at St Patrick's performed by their Organist David Leigh.

After travelling to Cork on Monday, we will meet at St Fin Barre’s stately Cathedral for an Organ Recital given by Robbie Carroll, Assistant Director of Music, followed by refreshments and tours. Choral Evensong will be sung by the Cathedral Choir at 18.15 and a dinner will be held at The River Lee Hotel at 7.30pm. The speaker at the dinner will be Director of Music of St Fin Barre’s, Peter Stobart.

Please note that the Belfry Tour at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin is not suitable for those with mobility issues or a fear of heights and involves 86 narrow winding steps. In addition please be aware that both the Henry Roe Room and Crypt at Christ Church (where the dinner is being held) involves short flights of stairs.

Please visit the link below for information on where to book flights, trains and accommodation, as attendees need to look after this aspect of the weekend for themselves.
