The new term has started well for the Cathedral Choir: 3 new Scholars have been added to the back rows, and, remarkably, in each of the three years since the new Choral Scholars’ scheme began, at least one of them has become a Lay Clerk at the end of their one-year scholarship. The presence of Choral Scholars has also lowered the average age of the adult members significantly! On the day of the King’s Accession, several members of the 3 choirs (boys, girls and adults) were formally admitted to the Choir by the Canon in Residence. Following auditions, a very healthy number of new boy and girl choristers have also joined the Choir this term.
The Assistant Director of Music Jamie Rogers has already given an Organ Recital this term, and the Director of Music David Newsholme will also be giving a recital, on Friday 4 October at 6.15 pm. This will be free of charge, but there will be a retiring collection. The programme for the Organ Recital and details of all music at all services can be found on the Music List.
Most services are also streamed and are available on the cathedral’s website and on YouTube. There will also be an Organ Open Evening on Friday 8 November from 6.30 pm, run by Jamie Rogers. This will include an introduction to the Cathedral’s organ (refurbished by Harrison & Harrison in 2020), a demonstration, and a chance for keen organists to play a short piece of their choice, time allowing. This will be free of charge and un-ticketed and anyone one wishing to play should write to [email protected] in advance.
On Saturday 23 November at 7.30 pm the girl choristers and Lay Clerks will be joined by the period instrument ensemble, The Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentlemen, and a stellar line up of critically acclaimed soloists for a candlelit performance of Handel’s Messiah. This will be an intimate presentation of some of Handel’s most enduring music in the beautiful surroundings of the Quire. Tickets will be available from the Canterbury Festival Box Office from 10am on 16 September.
