Evensong at Southwark
It has been customary for an annual Diocesan Choirs Festival Evensong to be held at Southwark Cathedral in June, and this year’s was held on Sunday 14th June, under the direction of Helen Smee, the first since her appointment as Director of Music in 2025. Parish churches represented included choirs from Wimbledon, Streatham and Dulwich, as well as individual singers from across the Diocese.
The setting was the Evening Service in E flat no 2 by Charles Wood, with responses by Richard Ayleward. Before the service Cathedral Organist Simon Hogan played the Impromptu Op 5 by Francis Jackson, and the anthem was Blest Pair of Sirens by Parry.

James Gough has been Assistant Organist and Music Administrator at Southwark Cathedral since 2021 and he also holds teaching positions at the Royal College of Music, Westminster School, and Westminster Abbey Choir School. He is very active as a recitalist both in Europe and the UK. This month he takes up a new appointment as Director of Music at St John the Evangelist, Upper Norwood.
