Volunteers’ Week – Future Leaders

Volunteers' Week

Volunteers’ Week 1-7 June

Nurturing the next generation of leaders and advocates for cathedral music will strengthen the sector. Through our Future Leaders Programme, young volunteers are given the opportunity to contribute fresh perspectives while developing valuable skills in administration, communications, fundraising and cultural leadership. Their energy and insight help shape the future of the sector, ensuring the traditions and communities surrounding cathedral music continue to thrive.

Libby Marsland has been part of the Future Leaders Programme since 2021. Inspired by her own formative experiences as a church chorister, Libby’s journey into music education and her current role in the charity sector have been deeply rooted in the transformative power of cathedral music. Here, she reflects on her musical journey and the lasting impact volunteering has had on her personally and professionally.

Libby talks to us for Volunteering Week about her love of music and volunteering:

Growing up, music has always been a huge part of my life. My musical journey began when I became a chorister at All Saints’ Church, Northampton aged 11 and I have been singing ever since. Being a chorister shaped so much of my journey, not only musically but personally too, giving me confidence, discipline, friendships, and a deep appreciation for the power of choral music and community. It also inspired me to pursue a Music degree further deepening my understanding and commitment to music education and accessibility for all, regardless of background.

Because of the impact cathedral music had on my own life, I wanted to give something back, which led me to begin volunteering with Cathedral Music Trust.

The Future Leaders Programme has been a valuable experience. It has helped me develop new skills, build confidence, and connect with others who share a passion for the future of cathedral music. It has been inspiring to learn from people across the sector, exchange ideas, and contribute to conversations about shaping the future of choral music.

There is something special about being part of an initiative that values music not only as an art form, but as something that brings people together, creates opportunity, and has a lasting impact on people’s lives.

I would recommend volunteering both with Cathedral Music Trust and more generally. It is a rewarding experience that can open doors you might not expect. You gain skills, confidence, friendships, and the opportunity to make a real difference while being part of something meaningful. To anyone thinking about volunteering, I would say go for it, even a small amount of time can have a big impact, both on others and on yourself.
