Restoration at Salford Cathedral

April 2024

By Rosemary Downey, Regional Coordinator for the North & West

Even though Salford Cathedral is currently undergoing a major restoration project which is not due to be completed before the end of 2025, music at the Cathedral continues to be as strong and vibrant as ever.

During Holy Week, the combined forces of the Cathedral Choir, the Girls’ Choir and the Cambiata Boys’ Choir provided a very moving performance of John Stainer’s ‘The Crucifixion’, with soloists drawn from the choral ranks.

During rehearsals for the Easter Vigil, the Cathedral Choir was presented with the High Sheriff Recognition Award by the current High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Mary-Liz Walker. This award recognises the many years of dedicated service by Salford Cathedral Choristers to the life of the Cathedral Parish and the Diocese of Salford through its music and the musical leadership of its congregation.

The Salford Schools Singing Programme has been going from strength to strength recently. The children have weekly sessions and last term worked hard to learn a new setting of ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ as part of the 2024 Year of Prayer focus. Choirs from 16 schools across the Diocese united to sing the piece just before Holy Week. Listen to their singing.

Coming up this term, the Cathedral Choir will unite with pupils from St Joseph’s RC Primary School in Halliwell, Bolton on Wednesday 1st May and will then unite with pupils from Sacred Heart RC Primary School in Westhoughton, Bolton on Wednesday 22nd May, for two concerts entitled ‘Mary Queen of Heaven’.

On Saturday 11th May, the Cathedral Choir will travel to Nottingham to perform a concert in the stunning acoustic of Nottingham Cathedral alongside Nottingham Cathedral Choir. They will then combine to sing for Mass the following day.
