March 2024

By Ian Thompson, Local Ambassador for Canterbury

This term, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Girls’ Cathedral Choir, there was a special service of Evensong in the Cathedral on Sunday 28 January, including the first performance of Old Chorister Gabriel Jackson’s anthem O Praise the Lord. There have also been informal organ recitals given by Assistant Director of Music Jamie Rogers, by James Gough from Southwark Cathedral, and organ duets given by Jamie Rogers and Robin Walker from King’s School Canterbury. There will be another informal recital, by Michael Butterfield from Marlborough College next week on Friday 22nd March at 6.15 pm. Find out more

The Cathedral community is also looking forward to no fewer than 3 live broadcasts on Easter Day this year, which will all take place in the Quire, and the boy choristers, girl choristers and Lay Clerks will be singing at all three services. The first will be a Eucharist at 8.10am, to be broadcast live on BBC Radio 4, the second will be a Eucharist at 10am, to be broadcast live on BBC One, and the third will be Evensong at 3pm, to be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.  Please note that you will need to apply for free tickets for the 10am Eucharist, through the cathedral's website.

Looking further ahead to next term, there will be an Organ Festival Open Evening on Friday 24 May at 6.30 pm. There will also be three organ recitals, on Fridays at 7.30 pm, for which tickets will be required, and they will be given by Tom Bell (14th June) , Roger Sayer (21st June) and Martin Baker (5th July). Further details will soon be publicised on the cathedral's website and tickets will be available via the Canterbury Festival Box Office.

In addition to all these events there will of course be the usual term time services with the Cathedral Choir.
